Coast Guard to Require PFDs on Uninspected Vessels
The notice of proposed rulemaking would align its regulations with the 2010 Coast Guard Authorization Act.
Currently, personal flotation devices are required on uninspected commercial barges and uninspected commercial sailing vessels only if they carry passengers for hire, but that's about to change.
The U.S. Coast Guard is publishing a notice of proposed rulemaking on July 17 that would align its regulations with the 2010 Coast Guard Authorization Act. That law directed that such vessels are covered by the statutory requirement to carry lifesaving devices even if they aren't carrying passengers, according to the NPRM.
The agency asks for comments within the next 90 days via www.regulations.gov, citing docket number USCG-2012-0919 or faxed to 202-493-2251.
The agency does not plan to hold a public meeting unless one is requested that explains why a meeting is needed, according to the NPRM.
