SCE Hosting Job Fair for San Onofre Workers

Several nuclear energy companies are among the employers participating in the July 10-11 event, which follows the company's decision to decommission the nuclear plant.

Southern California Edison is hosting a two-day job fair this week to help hundreds of workers at its San Onofre nuclear power plant find new jobs. The workforce of about 1,500 will be reduced to 600 this fall as the utility prepares to decommission the plant's Units 2 and 3.

Several nuclear power companies are participating in the job fair, including Diablo Canyon, Duke Energy, Southern Company, Comanche Peak, Palo Verde Nuclear, NRG Energy, Exelon, and PTE Energy, according to an SCE news release.

"People from all over the country are coming here," said Peggy Schmidt, human resources manager for San Onofre, who has coordinated the event. "We have many industries interested, not just nuclear energy."

She said employees will be allowed to take paid time off to attend one of the two days of the career fair. "Our employees are very appreciative just to know that we are reaching out to potential employers and putting on a career fair just for San Onofre employees. People are really excited to see the number of interested nuclear facilities and companies located here in Southern California. We want to help our employees."

Employees are being offered classes and webinars on writing effective resumes and a four-day, 10-hour work week has been put into effect to give them more flexibility for job searches.
