Hong Kong Closely Monitoring Avian Flu Cases

The Centre for Health Protection's latest update, issued July 3, said 50 suspected human cases have been received since March 31.

Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection, part of its Department of Health, reported July 3 that it has been notified about 50 suspected human cases of avian influenza A(H7). The center has been posting daily reports to update the citizenry.

Total notifications received by CHP since March 31 are 50 cases fulfilling reporting criteria of suspected human cases of avian influenza and 160 notifications not fulfilling reporting criteria. A CHP spokesman urged travelers not to visit wet markets with live poultry in affected areas and to avoid direct contact with poultry, birds or their droppings. If contact has been made, they should thoroughly wash their hands with soap and water.

"Influenza A(H7) is a statutorily notifiable infectious disease in Hong Kong. Locally, no confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) have been recorded so far," the spokesman said, and also reminded doctors to report any suspected case of A(H7). The Public Health Laboratory Services Branch of CHP is ready to receive and test specimens whenever necessary, according to the center.

CHP's avian influenza page (www.chp.gov.hk/en/view_content/24244.html) offers additional information.
