NASA to Showcase Astronaut Fitness for Social Media Followers

Thirty people who register by noon EDT on June 21 will be able to participate in the July 17 event at the Johnson Space Center, which has studied the effects of prolonged spaceflight for decades.

Registration closes at noon EDT June 21 for a July 17 event at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston that is limited to just 30 social media followers of the agency. Personnel at the center, which is the home of astronaut training, will give them an inside llok at life on board the International Space Station, the life science research conducted there, and the health stabilization process for astronauts as they train for extended stays on the ISS, live and work there, and then return to Earth.

JSC has been studying the health effects of extended spaceflight for decades. NASA's announcement of the event says the participants will have a chance to ask questions of space station human research scientists and to take part in a "unique fitness demonstration."

They also will be able to tour the Mission Control Center, the Space Vehicle Mock up Facility, and the Astronaut Exercise Equipment Training Facility and will learn how the space station is being used to test technologies to help astronauts safely reach an asteroid and, eventually, Mars.
