Carpet Manufacturer Cited for 15 Serious Violations

Garland Sales Inc. in Georgia now owes $73,000 for the numerous violations.

Garland Sales Inc. in Dalton, Ga. Has been cited with 15 serious violations that followed a November 2012 inspection in to the carpet manufacturing facility. This inspection, part of OSHA’s emphasis on amputation protection, resulted in proposed fines of $73,000.

The more than 300 employees at the facility were exposed to chemical hazards by the company’s failure to develop or implement hazards communication programs. Other citations included electrical shock hazards, caught-in/struck-in hazards, and fire hazards.

"Employers have the responsibility to identify and remove hazards from the workplace to protect workers," said Christi Griffin, acting area director of OSHA's Atlanta-West Area Office. "They should not wait for OSHA to conduct an inspection to identify and correct workplace hazards."
