DOT Makes Funds Available for Tribal Road Safety

These funds will improve tribal area roadways, some of the most dangerous in the country.

The Department of Transportation Safety has announced new plans to improve driving safety on tribal lands by making $8.6 million available for aid. These funds, part of the Tribal Transportation Program Safety Funds, will improve these areas that are consistently ranked among those with the nation’s highest fatality rates.

“In his State of the Union address, President Obama called on us to ‘Fix it First’ by targeting the most urgent upgrades for roads and bridges,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, in a statement on the DOT website.  “These grants are just another example of our steadfast commitment to tribal communities and will help fund much-needed road repairs, improve safety and create jobs.”

These grants will apply only to federally recognized tribal governments.

For applicants that are interested in this funding, the DOT is providing two webinars to explain the application process. They will be today from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. EDT and May 8 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. EDT.
