Fifth Edition Construction Chart Book Published

CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training published the expanded edition, a 142-guide to the industry and its workers’ exposures to common hazards, including working at heights, noise above the NIOSH recommended exposure limit, and whole-body vibration.

CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training has published the fifth edition of "The Construction Chart Book: The U.S. Construction Industry and Its Workers," an expanded sourcebook for economic, demographic, employment/income, education/training, and safety and health data on the industry. This 142-page fifth edition covers 55 topic pages, five more than the previous version, with descriptive text on one page and charts on the opposite page.

The fifth edition was released April 25. It addresses green jobs and several other topics not covered in previous editions. (CPWR image)Topics covered for the first time in this edition include green construction (LEED certified projects -- square feet by region, per capita, by state; the percentage of green employment by industry, construction subsector, and trade), unemployment and re-employment rates of displaced construction workers, exposures to work-related hazards, lost-time injuries and fatalities by trades and by states, and there is a new section on OSHA inspections, violations, and citations.

For example, data from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration, shows elevator installers, roofers, drywall installers, power-line installers, and ironworkers are exposed to heights on the job almost daily, and drywall installers, roofers, painters, and insulation workers spend more time climbing ladders, scaffolds, or poles than other occupations. Exposures of specific trades to electricity, nail guns, struck-by hazards, and other types of hazards are discussed.

"We take great pride in all of our research, but this book holds a special place within CPWR," said Pete Stafford, executive director of CPWR. "Since we began publishing this book in 1997, the Chart Book has been cited frequently in peer-reviewed publications and elsewhere. We see its contents appear in many forms -- news articles, presentations at conferences, data for safety professionals driving home a point, and as a resource for labor/management organizations."

The Chart Book can be accessed online at no charge through the CPWR website, including PowerPoint files of the book’s charts. Print editions can be purchased by calling 301-495-8500 or emailing [email protected].
