Ohio Plastics Company Placed in OSHA Severe Violator Enforcement Program

Berry Plastics Corp. is facing $86,000 worth of fines after receiving two repeat and four serious violations.

An Ohio plastics manufacturer has been placed on OSHA’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program after receiving six violations. These violations, two of which were repeats, carry proposed fines totaling $86,000.

One of the repeat violations that Berry Plastics Corp. was cited for was failing to conduct periodic inspections after a February 2012 inspection. The second repeat violation was for failing to document and utilize hazardous energy control procedures.

The serious violations that the company received included failure to guard rotating parts on machines in the factory and conduct regular inspections of the equipment.  

"Training workers on proper hazardous energy control procedures can prevent the unexpected energization of machinery and protect workers from injuries while they conduct servicing or maintenance," said Kim Nelson, OSHA's area director in Toledo, in a statement. "OSHA is committed to protecting the safety and health of workers on the job."

Additional serious violations included not using fall protection equipment and personal protective equipment.

The Severe Violator Enforcement Program requires follow-up inspections ensure future compliance.
