Ireland Recalls Heat Pump After Two Fires
There is a risk that capacitors in the heat pump's converter box can fail and burn. The product is made in Sweden.
Two house fires related to a Swedish-made domestic heat pump have caused Ireland to order a recall of the product, according to the Jan. 25 weekly notice of recalled consumer products from the European Commission's RAPEX team.
The Thermia Diplomat and Diplomat Duel brand pumps, model numbers 1550 and 1050, do not comply with the Low Voltage Directive, according to the posted notice. It says there is a risk that capacitors in the heat pump's converter box can fail and burn, setting fire to the box. Once the box ignites, it will burn aggressively and will not extinguish, the notice states.
Other recalled products listed in this notice included an extension cord, motorcycle tires, a smoke detector, cosmetics, toys, children's apparel, fireworks, and a "fruit crusher" intended for use by home or small commercial cider makers. This product fails to meet either the Machinery Directive of the EN 13857 European standard because its construction does not prevent someone's hand or arm from coming into contact with the cutting blade.
