DOE Grants Millions to Biofuel Research

With a grant of $10 million from the Department of Energy, five projects across the nation work to affordably and sustainably convert biomass into biofuel.

Striving to advance research into biofuels and bio-based products, the Department of Energy has granted $10 million to projects in California, Maryland, Texas, and Washington.

The five projects convert biomass into sugars using synthetic biological and chemical processes. The sugars then are transformed into biofuels and other products.

The projects awarded, collaborations between universities, labs, and private corporations, are working to create these bio-products affordable and sustainable.

Among the collaborations awarded are: Novozymes and Lygos in California, J. Craig Venter Institute in Maryland, Texas AgriLife Research, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington. Each venture was award amounts ranging from $1.2 million to $2.5 million.
