'Speak up. Work Safe' 2013 Video Contest Under Way

The Oregon Young Employee Safety Coalition, Oregon OSHA, and several partner organizations are sponsoring it this year.

The Oregon Young Employee Safety Coalition (O[yes]), Oregon OSHA, SAIF Corporation, local American Society of Safety Engineers chapters, Liberty Northwest, the Greater Portland Construction Partnership, the Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology (CROET), the Central Oregon Safety and Health Association, SHARP Alliance, and Hoffman Construction are sponsoring the 2013 "Speak up. Work Safe." video contest, an event intended to raise awareness about safety on the job for young people. To enter, students must create a video of 90 seconds or less that fits the theme and must submit it by Feb. 1.

Participants are encouraged to use humor, creativity, and to share the message "Speak up. Work shouldn't cost you your future" while emphasizing ways to stay safe at work. Submissions will be judged on:

  • A teen worker health and safety message based on the concept of "Speak up. Work shouldn't cost you your future" as the main focus
  • Creativity and originality
  • Overall production value (video and audio quality)
  • Youth appeal

Contest winners will be announced at a screening event to be announced this spring of 2013. Winning entries will be posted on YouTube. Students are encouraged to use social media to spread the word about their contest entries with the tag #Oyesvideo.

The top three entrants receive cash prizes ranging from $300 to $500, with matching amounts awarded to their schools.

Pp>O[yes] and its members host a Student Day at the annual Oregon Governor's Occupational Safety & Health (GOSH) Conference. Students receive safety training they can apply on the job and are matched with safety professionals to explore more than 100 safety exhibits.
