108,000 Cordless Drills Recalled

Harbor Freight Tools is voluntarily recalling them because the trigger switch can overheat.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Harbor Freight Tools of Camarillo, Calif., announced a voluntary recall of about 108,000 cordless drills, model number 96526, because the units’ trigger switch can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard. One user reported to the company said an incident involving a drill burned through the handle, causing a minor injury.

The drills are blue and black, have a black trigger switch, and have a 19.2v rechargeable battery pack. The drill's model number is located on a yellow label on the left side of the drill. "Made in China" appears in black and red lettering on a yellow warning sticker on the right side of the unit.

These drills were sold at Harbor Freight Tools stores nationwide, via catalogs, and online at www.harborfreight.com from April 2008 through May 2012 for between $27 and $30. Consumers should stop using them, remove the rechargeable battery, and contact Harbor Freight Tools to receive a free replacement drill.
