ISEA Expert Panels to Continue at Safety Congresses
This year's quartet discussed the value of prescription safety glasses, elements of a quality respiratory program, the new ANSI/ASSE Z359.14-2012 standard for self-retracting devices, and the added value of buying PPE from a Qualified Safety Sales Professional.
ORLANDO, Fla. -– One of the highlights in the expo of the annual National Safety Congress & Expo is actually quite new: The "PPE Solutions from ISEA Experts" panel took place for only the second time Oct. 23 at booth 2971 inside the Orange County Convention Center, with four experts from ISEA member companies giving presentations. Their topics reflected the top 10 list of most frequently violated OSHA standards during the most recent federal fiscal year –- also announced here during the conference -– making them useful and timely for attendees.
The International Safety Equipment Association has gone a big step further by posting a brief summary that links to all four presentations.
The four presenters and their topics were:
J.P. Sankpill, president of U.S. Safety, explained why eye and face protection plans and requirements should include prescription safety glasses.
Lynn Feiner, product line leader, respiratory, for Honeywell Safety Products, discussed the elements of a good respiratory protection program. She told the audience to "keep it simple and keep it real."
Ray Mann, manager, technical services – fall protection for 3M Occupational Health & Environmental Safety, reviewed the new ANSI/ASSE Z359.14-2012 standard that sets requirements for design, use, testing, markings, inspections, maintenance and storage, and removal from service of self-retracting devices. This standard was published Aug. 20, 2012, and it establishes two classes of SRDs according to maximum arresting distance and average arresting force. It sets requirements for self-retracting devices used in fall arrest or rescue systems for people weighing from 130 to 310 pounds. SRDs will now be required to include a visual load impact indicator that should be visible to the wearer at the full extension of the line prior to use, according to his presentation.
Loren Rivkin, executive vice president, marketing, for Saf-T-Gard International, Inc., discussed the added value of purchasing PPE from a Qualified Safety Sales Professional.
According to the summary, the panel will continue as a regular feature of the annual expo and will be tied in with the OSHA top 10 presentation.
