Seafood Distributor Fined for Employee's Death
Omega Protein of Moss Point, Miss. faces more than $79,000 in fines following the death of an employee in April.
The death of a worker in April 2012 has resulted in 25 health and safety violations being filed after an OSHA investigation. The processing plant in Moss Point, Miss. was investigated following the death of the 24-year-old employee, who died when he was caught in a conveyor belt.
The fines against Omega Protein, a seafood distributor, amount to $79,200. According to the agency, the accident could have been avoided if the company followed proper safety procedures.
Violations range from not providing a written respirator protection program to not making employees fix personal lockout devices to a group lockout device. In fact, there were 21 serious violations and four other-than-serious violations.
