Harwood Grant to Fund AGC Fall Protection Training

Associated General Contractors of America announced it will offer the training in eight locations next year thanks to its $120,000 grant.

Associated General Contractors of America will provide fall protection safety training in eight locations next year using a $120,000 Susan Harwood Training Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The training will cover fall protection for both commercial and residential construction.

"Nothing is more important to our members than the safety of every construction worker," said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association's chief executive officer, said Sept. 17. "The expanded program will help give construction workers the training they need to remain safe on the job site."

AGC's news release noted falls remain the leading cause of construction deaths, even as the total number of construction fatalities has declined by nearly 50 percent during the past five years. Falls accounted for 260 out of the 751 construction fatalities in 2010, Sandherr said.

Many of the latest Harwood grants support training for construction workers, but there also are grants for training in many other sectors, including warehousing and distribution, health care, food service, and more. Several grants support safety and health training for non-English speakers.

OSHA announced the award of a total of $10.7 million in grants to 72 nonprofit organizations on Sept. 11. The recipients included community- and faith-based groups, employer associations, labor unions, joint labor/management associations, and colleges and universities.
