The Lancet Launching Respiratory Medicine Journal

It will be the publication's fourth specialty journal when it debuts in early 2013. The journal's website launched Aug. 18.

Eight specialists working in America are on the international advisory board of The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, a new journal announced Aug. 18 by the esteemed British medical journal. While its website launched the same day, the journal's first issue will be published early next year.

One of the Americans on the board is Dr. Sonia Buist, professor emerita of medicine at the Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Ore., and a former president of the American Thoracic Society. Buist's chief interests are COPD and global health, according to the board members' brief online biographies at the website.

At the same time it launched the site, The Lancet published several papers and two clinical trials in a special issue about respiratory medicine just prior to the 2012 European Respiratory Society's annual congress in Vienna, Austria, Sept. 1-5. The magazine staff's commentary said an aging population, poor smoking cessation rates, and environmental factors including air pollution are expected to cause the global burden of respiratory disease to rise, with the European Lung Foundation estimating 11.9 million of 68 million deaths worldwide in 2020 will be caused by lung diseases.
