Physical Activity Series Timed to Olympics' Opening

A July 18 symposium at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine will launch The Lancet's series examining the global impact of physical inactivity on non-communicable diseases.

Timed to begin just ahead of the London Olympics' start in less than two weeks, The Lancet will publish what its staff described as "a major new series on physical activity, including new analysis that quantifies the global impact of physical inactivity on the world's major non-communicable diseases."

The launch of the series will be a free, all-day July 18 symposium of six papers presented by lead authorities in the field, with the event taking place at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Dr. Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of the medical journal, will lead a discussion following the presentations.

The series will review current levels of physical activity and trends worldwide, discuss why some people are active and some are not, evidence-based strategies for promoting physical activity, and "how a multi-sector and systems-wide approach that goes way beyond health will be critical to increase population-levels of activity worldwide."
