EV Workshop Identified Firefighter PPE as Top Concern

The July issue of NFPA's Electric Vehicle Safety Training newsletter includes a report summarizing the May 2012 workshop on emergency responders' PPE for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The July issue of NFPA's Electric Vehicle Safety Training newsletter contains information sure to be of interest to many, if not all, emergency responders. The top item included in it is a detailed report summarizing the May 1, 2012, workshop on responder PPE for hybrid and electric vehicles that NFPA hosted in Quincy, Mass. Casey E. Grant, P.E., of NFPA's Fire Protection Research Foundation prepared the report; links in the newsletter allow readers to access some of the experts' presentations.

The NFPA Electric Vehicle Safety Training project offers a growing library of resources supplied by hybrid and electric vehicle manufacturers.Participants in the workshop represented organizations including NHTSA, NFPA, UL, PPE manufacturers, motor vehicle manufacturers, EMS organizations, and the New York State Police and the agenda addressed PPE currently used by firefighters, current electrical PPE, existing electric vehicle emergency response guidance and tactics, and analysis of specific hazards responders may face.

Tow operators who provide roadside assistance may sometimes be first on the scene of an emergency; law enforcement and EMS often are. But participants in the workshop agreed PPE for the fire service is the greatest need, according to the report. (Grant's report says the towing and salvage industry "is highly decentralized with over 30,000 operators, and reaching them with training and education materials has inherent challenges.")

Other items in the July newsletter include links to newly posted responders' guides, including one for the Volkswagen e-Golf. The resources page on the website of NFPA's Electric Vehicle Safety Training project offers a growing library of resources supplied by hybrid and electric vehicle manufacturers, including Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Honda, Lexus, Tesla Motors, Porsche, Cadillac, Buick, Saturn, GMC, Infiniti, Azure Dynamics, Lincoln, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Mazda, Fisker Automotive, Acura, Audi, and Coda.
