Inbound to McCarran: Safety 2013
The heat may not be to your liking when next year's ASSE conference takes place June 24-27 in Vegas, but McCarran International Airport's Terminal 3 may be.
The 2013 ASSE conference, Safety 2013, will take place June 24-27 in Las Vegas, when the average daily high temperature is 102 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low is 78 degrees. It's fairly easy to avoid the daytime heat in Las Vegas, so conference attendees should find plenty to entertain them in the Safety 2013 educational program, the expo, and the city around them.
For out-of-towners, getting there also should be easier this time around because McCarran International Airport will open its state-of-the-art $2.4 billion Terminal 3 (T3) on June 27, 2012. The largest capital improvement project in the airport's 64-year history produced the three-story terminal, which boasts some impressive statistics:
- 9.5 million work hours
- 1.9 million square feet
- 5,954 parking spaces
- 245,904 cubic yards of concrete poured
- 4.6 million linear feet of post-tensioning steel cable
- 100 percent wireless coverage
- nearly 300 slot machines
- 14 gates, including seven equipped to handle direct international arrivals
Each gate will include self-boarding equipment, described this way in the airport's guide to T3: "with the simple scan of a pre-printed boarding pass or mobile device, verified passengers can immediately board their flight without the need of an airline attendant." Self-service baggage tagging also will ease check-in with participating air carriers, according to the guide.
Perini Building Co., which is headquartered in Las Vegas and built the CityCenter complex on the Strip, was prime contractor for the terminal building.
