ANA Conference Promotes Modeling Wellness

The Healthy Nurse Conference taking place June 14 asks RNs to become role models for their patients and for a healthy population.

Although registration has closed for the event, the American Nurses Association's 2012 Healthy Nurse Conference, which has the theme "Nurses as Models of Wellness in Action" and will take place June 14 in Washington, D.C., should provide food for thought (and action) for registered nurses who visit the ANA website.

The one-day event is intended to inspire nurses to integrate healthy habits in their family and professional lives and to become role models for their patients and a healthy population. Featured speakers at the event are:

  • David Maxfield, one of the authors of Vital Smarts' Change Anything
  • David P. Hrabe, Ph.D., RN, executive director, Academic Innovations and Partnerships, and associate professor of Clinical Nursing at the Ohio State University College of Nursing
  • Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, Ph.D., RN, associate vice president for Health Promotion, university chief wellness officer, and dean of the College of Nursing at Ohio State
  • Claire C. Caruso, Ph.D., RN, NIOSH research health specialist

ANA represents the interests of registered nurses through state nurses associations and organizational affiliates. Its journal, OJIN, published six articles in its May 2012 issue under the heading "The New Millennium: Evolving and Emerging Nursing Roles."

Suzy Harrington, DNP, RN, MCHES, director of the American Nurses Association Center for Health, Safety, and Wellness, discussed efforts to promote nurses' health and wellness and the Healthy Nurse Conference in an interview available at www.BestNursingDegree.com.
