Two Winners in 2011 AMA App Challenge
The Rounder app won the physician category and the JAMA Clinical Challenge app won the resident/fellow/medical student category, the American Medical Association announced Nov. 11.
Two winners in the 2011 AMA App Challenge will be in New Orleans for a "grand unveiling" of their winning ideas during the American Medical Association's semi-annual policy making meeting that began Nov. 12. AMA posted an announcement on Nov. 11 that Dr. Cynthia L. Beamer, M.D., of Texas and Michael Ray Bykhovsky of Georgia won the contest to devise the next great medical app.
Beamer's Rounder app is described as a "data and capture point for information on hospital patients" that can be customized to suit the user's need and experience level. It traces data including ID, dates of admission and discharge, working diagnosis, allergies, weight/BMI, physical exam significant findings, and meds. The site listing finalists in the contest says Beamer is a pediatric ER physician.
Bykhovsky, described as a third-year medical student at the Georgia Health Science University in Augusta, Ga., submitted a JAMA Clinical Challenge app that provides clinical vignettes backed by information such as history of present illness, family history, medications, and lab findings. Once users feel confident in a diagnosis, they select from a multiple-choice list, followed by the correct answer and a thorough lesson about the diagnosis. Users would be invited to submit additional case studies.

AMA said its members voted for their favorites among 10 finalists chosen from hundreds of submitted ideas. The two winners will receive $2,500 in cash and prizes apiece and the trip for two to New Orleans to showcase their ideas at0 the meeting.
