IOM to Release Report on Health IT and Patient Safety

The "Health IT and Patient Safety: Building Systems for Better Care" report will be released Nov. 10.

The Institute of Medicine will release a new report Nov. 10 aimed at helping the government, health care providers, and health care technology vendors take steps to improve patient safety.

IOM says the federal government invests billions of dollars to encourage hospitals and health care providers to adopt health information technology, with the intended benefits from the use of electronic health records to be in place by 2014. "However, concerns about potential harm are emerging as providers increasingly rely on electronic medical records, secure patient portals, and other information technologies to deliver care," according to the institute's announcement.

The "Health IT and Patient Safety: Building Safer Systems for Better Care" report examines the technologies and recommends actions by these prime stakeholders. Members from the committee that wrote the report will discuss their recommendations during a one-hour public briefing starting at 10:30 a.m. EST Nov. 10 in Washington, D.C. A live audio webcast will be provided at http://www.nationalacademies.org.
