NYC Set to Host 2011 World & Police Fire Games
About 50 events reached their maximum number of competitors and have been closed. Schedules for the events will be posted Aug. 15, and the games take place Aug. 26 through Sept. 5.
The 2011 World Police & Fire Games are about to begin in New York City, with as many as 20,000 professional firefighters and law enforcement personnel taking part in dozens of athletic events. About 50 events already have reached their maximum number of competitors and are closed; the event schedule will be posted Aug. 15.
Jim Carney, president and CEO of these games, has said the goal was to recruit 7,500 volunteers to help produce them, and more than 33,000 room nights had been sold. Partners for the games include Scott Safety and a collaboration of DuPont with Honeywell's Morning Pride, which makes bunker gear for firefighters and also EMS apparel. Lenzing, an Austrian company that makes high-performance fibers, sponsors athletes in the games, including firefighter Herbert Krenn of Austria, who wil compete in the Ultimate Firefighter three-day competition.
The games coincide with the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and are being presented with the cooperation of the New York City Police Department, the New York City Fire Department, the Port Authority Police Department, and the New York City Department of Corrections.
