Workshops Announced on Helmet, Body Armor Standards
The standards that are being revised cover two types of protective equipment for law enforcement.
The National Institute of Justice and the National Institute of Standards and Technology are co-hosting two workshops in July that will focus on updates to NIJ's standards for law enforcement PPE. The first on July 14 will discuss with interested parties the development of the revised NIJ Stab-Resistant Body Armor Standard, while the second on July 15 concerns ballistic helmets, riot helmets, and faceshields.
Both of these are limited to just 50 participants, with registration required by July 8.
There are two existing protective helmet standards: NIJ Standard for Ballistic Helmets and NIJ Standard for Riot Helmets and Face Shields. NIJ and NIST want the workshop to provide comments and recommendations for developing a revised standard for criminal justice protective helmets. "Participants are strongly encouraged to come prepared to ask questions and to voice suggestions and concerns," their notice states.
The body armor workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT at NIST, 100 Bureau Drive, Gaithersburg, MD, Building 101, Lecture Room B. Registration information is available at http://www.justnet.org/Pages/2011_NIJ_Stab-resistant_BA_Workshop.aspx.
