DOJ Developing Protective Helmet Standard

It may cover both ballistic and riot protection, according to the published request for committee members from certification bodies and testing labs.

The National Institute of Justice is seeking to fill as many as four positions on a Special Technical Committee that is developing a new standard for protective helmets. The Department of Justice agency's request seeks submissions by May 13 for representatives from certification bodies and testing laboratories with experience in programs for similar types of PPE.

The standard may cover both ballistic and riot protection. The committee consists of researchers, testing experts, certification experts, and representatives from stakeholder organizations who will participate in up to 12 two-day meetings during an 18-month period to develop the standard and certification program requirements. The meetings are expected to begin in June 2011.

Travel expenses and per diem will be reimbursed for all meetings, but the work is unpaid. "To be considered, there must not be any conflict of interest in which the proposed STC member has a direct financial relationship with manufacturers of protective helmets," the request states. Submissions should be sent to Jim Wong at [email protected]; participants will be notified regarding their acceptance by May 20.
