125 MIOSHA Staffers Making Site Visits June 8

The seventh annual Take a Stand Day asks companies to request a consultative visit now, promising there will be no citations or fine for participating workplaces.

May 25 and June 8 are important dates this year for high-hazard workplaces in Michigan. MIOSHA, the Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration, will conduct its seventh annual Take a Stand Day on June 8, and companies have until May 25 to schedule a consultative visit by MIOSHA staff. The benefit of scheduling a visit in advance is that participating workplaces will not receive citations or fines, the agency pledges.

MIOSHA will have more than 125 professional staffers -- including compliance staff, outreach consultants, managers, and supervisors -- making one-on-one site visits on June 8 in support of its Strategic Plan for FY2009-2013. The plan consists of MIOSHA's goals for that period, including:

  • Reducing by 20 percent the rate of worker injuries and illnesses in 13 designated high-hazard industries, which include hospitals, landscaping services, wood products manufacturing, and beverage and tobacco product manufacturing.
  • Reducing construction fatalities by 20 percent by focusing on the four leading causes -- falls, electrocutions, struck-by incidents, and crushed-by/caught-between incidents -- and reducing construction injuries and illnesses by 20 percent.
  • Increasing participation in MIOSHA's cooperative programs, including MSHARP, alliances, and partnerships.
  • Increasing employers' awareness of and participation in the MIOSHA Training Institute.
  • Responding to 97 percent of complaints within 10 working days for enforcement divisions.
  • Promulgating 100 percent of OSHA standards within six months and 80 percent of the other standards within deadlines set by an annual standards promulgation plan.
