NIOSH Reaches Twitter Milestone, Wants Nano Input

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Twitter page has passed 100,000 followers. Until April 15, NIOSH is accepting comments on how to enhance current nanotechnology research.

A social media milestone has been reached by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Twitter page, which now has passed 100,000 followers. The page had 100,048 followers the morning of April 8. It's a great site for finding out what all sorts of safety, health, and environmental organizations are doing.

Until April 15, NIOSH is accepting comments on how to enhance its current nanotechnology research as it updates its 2009 nanotechnology strategic plan. This will be the second update for the plan, originally issued in September 2005. NIOSH last month published a request for comments, saying it wants to build on the accomplishments of ongoing research as it sets strategic research goals and objectives through 2015.

NIOSH identified these 10 critical research areas for nanotechnology research and communication: (1) toxicity and internal dose, (2) measurement methods, (3) exposure assessment, (4) epidemiology and surveillance, (5) risk assessment, (6) engineering controls and personal protective equipment (PPE), (7) fire and explosion safety, (8) recommendations and guidance, (9) communication and information, and (10) applications. They agency said it may focus the research goals on five key goals for those areas: (1) provide guidance to protect workers, (2) alert workers, employers, governments, and the public about possible new hazards, (3) assess the hazards of nanomaterials and the risks to workers, (4) help workers by assessing and implementing exposure registries, and (5) assess the level of protection practiced in U.S. workplaces.
