Offshore Safety Advisory Panel Meeting April 18

The Ocean Energy Safety Advisory Committee to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement will meet April 18 in in Washington, D.C., to begin framing its action plan for the next one to two years, according to a meeting notice published by BOEMRE. The meeting will be open to the public.

The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. EDT and last until 5 p.m. at the U.S. Access Board, 1331 F St. NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004. For information, contact Dr. Brad J. Blythe at 703-787-1636 or [email protected].

The committee's members are representatives from the offshore drilling industry, federal government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the academic community. It provides policy advice to the secretary of the Interior through the director of BOEMRE on ocean energy safety, including drilling and workplace safety, well intervention and containment, and oil spill response. BOEMRE is the successor agency to the Interior unit that managed offshore royalties and leases, overseeing drilling activities; it came under fire after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and sank last year, triggering a major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The agenda for April 18 includes framing the committee's action plan for the next 12 to 24 months and an expert panel discusssing the findings and recommendations of recent investigations of U.S. offshore drilling regulation.
