Moscow Airport Explosion Death Toll Rises to 35
Reports posted by the Itar-Tass news service say about 130 people were injured by the explosion in a baggage claim area at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport at 4:32 p.m. Monday local time.
The death toll from an apparent suicide bomb explosion at Moscow's main Domodedovo airport at 4:32 p.m. local time today has reached 35, with about 130 others injured, the Itar-Tass news service reported. The report quoted Tatyana Morozova, identified as a spokeswoman for the Moscow inter-regional investigation department on transport of Russia's Investigation Committee and others who said the bomb was brought in through an entrance that is not equipped with metal detectors.
The explosion occurred at the entrance from the international arrivals section and filled the building with smoke. As many as four people may have been involved, according to Itar-Tass, which reported there were two dozen international flights arriving from 2 p.m. local time until the time that the explosion occurred, with passengers disembarking during that period from flights that had originated in New York City, Dubai, Ashgabat, Cairo, London, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Tokyo, Hurgada, and Istanbul -- so they "might have been staying in the area of the explosion that occurred not far from one of the restaurants," its report stated.
Media around the world including The New York Times posted reports about the explosion. The news agency's reports say 22 million passengers last year used the airport, which is the Russian capital's main international airport.
