Nationwide Anhydrous Ammonia Training Tour Starts Feb. 15

Several organizations are working with TRANSCAER, the voluntary national program helping responders and communities prepare for hazmat transportation incidents, as it begins a yearlong training effort in Stockton, Calif.

A full year of anhydrous ammonia safety training programs will begin Feb. 15 in the Port of Stockton in Stockton, Calif., when representatives of TRANSCAER® (Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response) offer high-quality awareness training to the emergency responder community. TRANSCAER announced the program late last year and said then that 25 states were making plans to host events in the tour.

A who's who of transportation and chemical companies are participants or sponsors, including The Fertilizer Institute, BNSF, Dow Chemical, DuPont, INEOS NOVA, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern Corp., CSX Transportation, Groendyke Transport, GATX Corp., and National Tank Truck Carriers Inc. HEPACO, an oil and chemical spill cleanup company based in Charlotte, N.C., also is participating.

Covering cargo trailers and rail cars, the training will include ammonia properties and emergency response and first aid for release victims. The target audience consists of responders, agricultural businesses, emergency managers, public safety representatives, and law enforcement personnel. The curriculum was developed by a committee with representatives from several transporters, along with the Ammonia Safety Training Institute, The Fertilizer Institute, and Tanner Industries Inc., an anhydrous ammonia supplier based in Southampton, Pa.
