CSB Hearing to Examine Regulation of Offshore Safety

Part of the investigation the board agreed to do after the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion, this Dec. 15 event will be a public hearing involving several international experts.

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board has scheduled a Dec. 15 public hearing in Washington, D.C., that will examine how the safety of offshore oil and gas exploration and production activities is regulated. The "Regulatory Approaches to Offshore Oil and Gas Safety" hearing will be available as a webcast, with a transcript of the proceedings published by the board.

CSB said international regulators, union representatives, and industry groups will participate in the hearing, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Ballroom, 1250 22nd St. NW. The board members and Deepwater Horizon investigation team will hear testimony from safety experts involved in offshore drilling activities from the United Kingdom, Australia, and Norway, according to the announcement, and members of the audience will have an opportunity to comment and to submit questions for participants.

The explosion occurred April 20, following by the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and a large oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico.
