Two Public Hearings Set on Vehicle Emissions Rules

EPA and NHTSA announced the public hearings will take place Nov. 15 in Chicago and Nov. 18 in Cambridge, Mass.

Two public hearings have been scheduled for the joint proposed Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Engines and Vehicles rules soon to be published by EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agencies also announced they will accept comments on NHTSA's Draft Environmental Impact Statement.

The hearings will be held Nov. 15 at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Chicago, 163 East Walton Place in Chicago beginning at 11 a.m. local time, and Nov. 18 at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge, 575 Memorial Drive, in Cambridge, Mass., beginning at 10 a.m.

The rules will set greenhouse gas emissions limit and require higher fuel efficiency for on-road heavy-duty vehicles. NHTSA's proposed fuel consumption standards and EPA's proposed carbon dioxide emissions standards would affect combination tractors, heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans, and gasoline and diesel heavy-duty engines. EPA's hydrofluorocarbon emissions standards would apply to air conditioning systems in tractors, pickup trucks, and vans, and its nitrous oxide and methane emissions standards would apply to heavy-duty engines, pickup trucks, and vans.

To speak at either hearing, contact EPA's Julia MacAllister at 734-214-4131, fax 734-214-4050, or [email protected].
