Experts to Discuss Aging Drivers' Safety at NTSB Forum

The Nov. 9-10 event includes experts from several DOT agencies, Volvo and Ford Motor, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and academia to discuss driver, vehicle, and roadway factors.

The National Transportation Safety Board has posted the agenda for its public forum on Safety, Mobility, and Aging Drivers that will be held Nov. 9-10 in the NTSB Board Room in Washington, D.C. It also will be available as a webcast.

Starting with a discussion of accidents, injuries, and fatalities involving older drivers, the forum then will turn to an occupant protection panel and a highway and vehicle design panel. Day two will discuss how driver capability can be assessed (both mental and physical abilities) and will end with a panel examining state Department of Motor Vehicle licensing approaches that have been enacted by state legislatures in recent years.

Speakers will include NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman; Anne McCartt, Ph.D., of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety; Ann Dellinger, Ph.D., MPH, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Stephen Ridella of NHTSA; Stephen Rouhana, Ph.D., of Ford Motor Company; Dick Schaeffer of the Federal Highway Administration; Thomas Broberg of Volvo; and Lisa Molnar of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).
