New Site Facilitates Glove Comparisons

The site by IRSST, a Montreal research agency seeking to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses, allows searches by glove model or hazard type.

The Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST), located in Montreal, has created a new website to help workers and OHS managers select protective gloves for specific applications. The site (http://www.irsst.qc.ca/gants/en/index.html) allows visitors to search by glove model or type of hazard, such as cut, puncture, or tear. Waterproof, chemical resistance level, and food handling are additional selections that are available.

"Even if it has been designed for an occupational use, this guide can also be useful in the case of personal- and leisure-type activities," according to IRSST. "When hands are exposed to hazards, they must be protected. Injuries can be avoided when gloves are suited for the risks, are worn correctly and are maintained appropriately."

A PDF document on the site offers information about current laws and regulations, risk management, glove types and materials, hazards, and manufacturing processes.

To mark its 30th anniversary, IRSST also is offering a $10,000 prize this year to the author or authors of the best scientific article published in the past five years in occupational safety and health. The deadline to apply is June 28. A jury of scientific experts will judge the contest.
