Fire-Rescue Med, taking place May 1-5 in Las Vegas, includes two awards for organizations doing good work to save sudden cardiac arrest victims.

2010 Heart Safe Award Deadline Nears

March 22 is the deadline to apply for the awards being handed out at Fire-Rescue Med in early May. The awards honor creative approaches to improving therapies for patients with acute coronary syndromes and sudden cardiac arrest.

The application deadline -- March 22 -- is drawing near for the 2010 Heart Safe Community Awards sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs' EMS Section and Physio-Control, the AED manufacturer that is a division of Medtronic. Two awards will be presented during Fire-Rescue Med, a conference taking place May 1-5 in Las Vegas, one for a community with more than 100,000 residents and one for a smaller community.

Agencies and systems nominated for the award must have demonstrated creative approaches to improving therapies for patients with acute coronary syndrome and its life-threatening complication, sudden cardiac arrest, through:

  • Bystander CPR
  • AED deployment, such as PAD programs and first response
  • Out-of-hospital 12-lead ECGs
  • 12-lead ECG advanced notification to the receiving hospital
  • Partnering with local hospitals to improve outcomes from ACS and sudden cardiac arrest
  • Communication programs to increase awareness and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest and heart attacks.

Each winning agency will receive admission for two to the Fire-Rescue Med conference, travel, and meal expenses for the two while they attend the conference, along with a crystal trophy.

Last year's Heart Safe Small Community Award went to the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority of Colorado, while the Large Community Award went to San Diego Project Heart Beat and the San Diego Fire Department of California.
