NIOSH E-Newsletter Offers WorkLife Initiative Update

NIOSH on Monday posted the first e-newsletter of its WorkLife Initiative, which is an effort to improve the health of working people by promoting collaborations, analysis, and practices that are proven to protect workers' well-being. One of the effort's goals is to "overcome the traditional separation of the occupational health and health promotion professional communities."

The first newsletter includes an avenue to sign up for a free e-subscription and news updates from the three current WorkLife Centers of Excellence. These are the University of Iowa Healthier Workforce Center for Excellence, funded by NIOSH in 2006; the Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace, also funded in 2006 and a collaborative research-to-practice initiative of investigators from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the University of Connecticut; and the Harvard School of Public Health Center for Work, Health and Wellbeing, funded in 2007.

The Harvard center is investigating integrated approaches to improve the health and safety of health care workers. Its director is Glorian Sorensen, Ph.D., MPH, professor of Society, Human Development and Health in the Harvard School of Public Health and director of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Center for Community-Based Research. For information, contact Sorensen at [email protected].

The WorkLife Initiative itself is headed by Dr. Gregory Wagner. A fact sheet offers additional information about it.
