2008 Injury Research Symposium Begins

Welcoming remarks this morning by Acting Director Christine Branche are scheduled to open the fourth National Occupational Injury Research Symposium (NOIRS) presented by NIOSH. Through Thursday, leading researchers in occupational injury prevention will present findings about many major categories of injury, including needlestick and patient moving injuries among health care workers, explosions and noise exposures in underground mines, construction falls, food industry slips and falls, agricultural injuries from tractors and animals, sleep apnea and motor vehicle crashes, electrical utility workers' sprains and strains, forklift-related injuries, injury patterns among shift workers, public safety and EMS work injuries, and injuries suffered by Hispanic workers.

The event takes place in Pittsburgh, Pa. at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel. Hosted by NIOSH, NOIRS gives researchers and other professionals a forum to share their findings and experiences in pursuit of preventing traumatic occupational injuries. Those unable to attend the conference can participate electronically by posting comments, research, and real-world examples on the NIOSH Science Blog.

There, Nancy Stout, Ed.D., director of the NIOSH Division of Safety Research, and Deputy Director Tim Pizatella, M.S., have posted a discussion of the event's connection to the agency's research to practice (r2p) initiative. R2p tries to transfer research findings, technologies, and information into effective prevention practices and products useful in workplaces.

  • The MGC Simple Plus

The MGC Simple Plus is a simple-to-use, portable multi gas detector that runs continuously for three years without being recharged or routinely calibrated after its initial charge and calibration during manufacturing. The detector reliably tests a worksite’s atmosphere for hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, oxygen and combustible gases (LEL). Its durability enables the detector to withstand the harshest treatment and environments, hence earning it an IP 68 rating. The MGC Simple Plus is also compatible with a variety of accessories, such as the GCT External Pump. Visit gascliptech.com for more information. Read More
