Major U.S. Health Care Construction Project in Iraq Nears Completion

A project to construct 132 new health care clinics across Iraq has almost been completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Gulf Region Division, and 195 of 230 health care projects planned for the country have been completed during the past four years, Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Dorko, the division’s commander, said during an Aug. 3 press conference, according to a report posted Monday by American Forces Press Service.

"The U.S. government and the [Iraqi] Ministry of Health work in partnership to ensure that all health care facilities are built in areas where services are most needed and that the projects we are working fit the needs of the country," Dorko said, according to the article written by Gerry L. Gilmore. Dorko said 116 of the 132 new clinics have been finished and turned over to the ministry, two more are in the process of being turned over, and the remaining 14 will be completed by September, according to the article.

Gilmore wrote that these 132 clinics are the $284 million Primary Health Care Center program, which began two years ago, and that each clinic is equipped with dental and lab facilities, X-ray machines, and a pharmacy.
