EPA Begins Two-Week Cleanup of Carman Chemical Inc.
EPA Region 7 announced on May 5 it has begun work to remove the last of several aging containers of pesticides from a Monroe County, Mo., agricultural chemical business, finishing a Superfund cleanup operation that the owners of the business had been ordered to complete four years ago.
Carman Chemical Inc.(CCI)--located at 25358 Business Highway 24, in Paris, Mo.--officially received a unilateral administrative order from EPA on May 7, 2004. At that time, owners James P. and Janice Carman were directed by EPA to remove a number of pesticide containers, some of which were leaking or unlabeled, from their business property. By November 2005, CCI had substantially complied with the order to remove the chemicals and containers from the business property, and approximately 108,000 pounds of wastes were eventually removed and disposed of by incineration. However, subsequent inspections of the business property by EPA show that perhaps 100 or more containers of chemicals still remain at the site.
Currently, EPA staff and contract employees are working to remove and properly dispose of the remaining containers. The cleanup process is expected to be completed in approximately two weeks. For more information on the EPA Superfund program, visit www.epa.gov/superfund.
