AAOHN to Host MRSA Webcast

The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. is hosting a webcast titled "Community and Healthcare-Associated MRSA: Populations at Risk" on Wednesday, May 21, from 2-3 p.m. EST. Rachel Gorwitz, M.D., MPH, medical epidemiologist with the Division of Healthcare Quality and Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will be the featured presenter, offering advice on how to detect clinical signs of MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and appropriate methods of treatment for the infection. Approximately 94,360 people developed a serious MRSA infection in 2005, according to statistics released in 2007 from the CDC.

Gorwitz is the lead author of CDC's guidelines for clinical management of MRSA in the community and has authored and co-authored several other publications on the topic. Prior to joining DHQP four years ago, she was an epidemic intelligence service officer in the Respiratory Disease Branch of CDC's Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases and a CDC preventative medicine resident assigned to the Georgia Division of Public Health. Her other research interests include healthcare-associated infections in newborns and children.

AAOHN says that upon conclusion of this webcast, participants will recognize and understand opportunities for prevention of MRSA and be able to increase awareness of the infection by educating others on the seriousness of MRSA. Participants will earn 1 CNE contact hour for attending the session. For registration information and complete details, visit www.aaohn.org or call (770) 455-7757.
