SAMHSA Appoints 7 New National Advisory Council Members

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration announced the appointments of seven new members to its National Advisory Council, a 12-member panel of experts that meets regularly to advise the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and SAMHSA's Administrator on a wide range of public health matters related to prevention, treatment, and recovery support services.

"We are honored these distinguished leaders have agreed to serve on our Advisory Council," said SAMHSA Administrator Terry Cline, Ph.D. "The diverse backgrounds and experience will help inform our work at SAMHSA to improve the capacity and effectiveness of the mental health and substance abuse service delivery systems that promote prevention, treatment and recovery."

The new SAMHSA National Advisory Council members are Marvin Alexander, youth coordinator for the Mid-South Health Systems Inc. A.C.T.I.O.N for Kids Project, Jonesboro, Ark.; George Braunstein, executive director, Virginia Community Services Board of Chesterfield County, Va.; Terry L. Cross, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., executive director, National Indian Child Welfare Association Inc., Portland, Oregon; Judy Cushing, president and CEO, Oregon Partnership, Portland, Ore.; Keith Humphreys, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Psychiatry, Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, Calif.; Cynthia A. Wainscott, former CEO and president of Mental Health America, Cartersville, Ga.; and Edward K.S. Wang, Psy.D., director, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Department of Mental Health, Boston.
