ASSE Foundation Puts $105,000+ Up for Grabs in Scholarships, Grants

The American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation announced today the availability of several scholarships and professional development grants for 2008 for students pursuing degrees in occupational safety, health, and the environment and ASSE members seeking to advance their professional credentials in safety. More than $105,000 in funds is available as a result of increased support this year from donors that have included individual ASSE members, chapters, and corporations.

Descriptions of each of the many scholarships and grants along with applications and eligibility guidelines can be found at www.asse.org/foundation/scholarships/scholarships.php. All applications are due by Dec. 1, 2007, with award recipients announced on or around April 1, 2008.

"Our scholarship and grant program continues to grow as does the occupational safety, health, and environmental field," said ASSEF manager Mary Goranson. "With the support of our members and corporate donors we continue to reach out to students and practitioners alike to provide them with the resources they need to best help their careers and in the profession's overall goal of protecting people, property, and the environment. We are urging applicants to apply as soon as possible."

This year graduate students are eligible to receive a second award if their first one was received as an undergraduate, and ASSEF is offering two scholarships to attend ASSE's SAFETY 2008 Professional Development Conference in Las Vegas from June 9-12, 2008. The award includes the conference registration fee, airfare, hotel, and meals up to $1,200. Students must apply and meet the undergraduate criteria for academic scholarships to be eligible for this award. Also new are the ASSE Diversity Committee Scholarship for $1,000 and the Central Indiana ASSE Scholarship for $1,000.

In addition, several ASSEF donors increased their awards. These include the Bechtel Group Foundation at $8,000 and the Washington Group International Safety Scholarship now at $5,000. Additional awards have been added to some scholarships such as a second award to the Medina Scholarships for Hispanics in Safety, a second award to the Liberty Mutual Scholarship now offering two $3,000 awards, and a second Leadership Award from the Greater Boston Chapter.
