AIHA, NIOSH Support Science News Service

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have partnered in support of the American Institute of Physics' (AIP's) syndicated science news program titled "Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science." AIHA says the aim of the service is to develop a reliable and effective vehicle to communicate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to all viewers.

According to a 2004 Pew Research Center for the People and the Press Media Consumption and Believability Study, local television news is the primary source of information for 60 percent of the U.S. public. In addition, 44 percent of the U.S. population cites television news as their primary source of science and technology news, as shown by NSF 2004 indicators.

"These numbers attest to the fact that the opportunity for mass education exists and the people are out there waiting to be informed," said AIHA President Donald J. Hart, Ph.D, CIH. "We value this opportunity to once again partner with NIOSH, and we look forward to this collaboration to raise awareness of the importance of occupational and environmental health and safety."

The program is produced by AIP, with help from its member scientific societies, other contributing scientific societies, and Ivanhoe Broadcast News, as well as with a generous grant from the National Science Foundation. The station's stories are research based, and through AIHA's partnership with NIOSH, will feature segments shot at NIOSH research facilities, tied in with research from the industrial hygiene profession and AIHA experts.

The collaboration is the latest of several initiatives by AIHA and NIOSH under a memorandum of understanding to advance the prevention of work-related injuries and illnesses.
