Safety+ Symposium 2023 Kicks Off in Orlando, Showcasing Innovations and Education

The annual event offers a combination of networking and educational events.

Safety professionals across every industry have gathered at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando, Florida, for the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association’s (VPPPA) annual Safety+ Symposium. Running from Sept. 17 to Sept. 20, this year's event has already offered guests a blend of educational, networking and special events.

Leading up to the main event, attendees were treated to exclusive tours. Under the guidance of a veteran astronaut, participants went on a journey through America's space exploration history at the Kennedy Space Center on Sept. 16. The next morning, the VPPPA Scholarship Golf Tournament was held at the Hawk's Landing Golf Club. Proceeds will fund scholarships for future environmental health and safety professionals.

Also on Sept. 17, guests attended a unique Daytona International Speedway tour that unveiled the legacy of motorsports. From cherished racing artifacts in ISC’s Archives and Research Center to the majestic Champion DAYTONA 500 Car, the thrill of the racetrack mingled seamlessly with the core theme of the symposium: safety.

Setting the stage for an immersive learning experience, the symposium then kicked off with eight specialized workshops on Sept. 17. Sessions such as "Confined Space," "LOTO," "DiSC Leadership Training" and "Industrial Hygiene" paved the way for professionals to delve deep into the intricacies of workplace safety. On the next day, key topics included “Worksite Analysis” and an engaging look into the challenges of “Near-Miss Reporting.”

Beyond the more than 50 workshops and over 150 exhibitors, attendees were treated to several major networking events. The VPPPA membership convened for the Safety+ opening reception on Sept. 17, providing attendees with an overview of the organization's milestones and future plans as well as a chance to participate in policy-setting and board member elections. This event included hors d'oeuvres and drinks, creating a collaborative, relaxed atmosphere for all.

The following day was the VPPPA Regional Networking Reception, during which attendees connected with safety professionals from their regions. To encourage deeper connection, each region wore color-coded T-shirts to represent their areas. This casual event too offered complimentary food and beverages, fostering camaraderie among like-minded professionals.

While Safety+ is dedicated to fostering the knowledge of safety professionals, the event’s interactive workshops, evening receptions and peer-to-peer interactions underpin the VPPPA’s mission: fostering a holistic approach to occupational safety and health. As the symposium progresses, attendees eagerly anticipate insights from industry leaders and upcoming regulatory trends, ensuring that businesses stay ahead in the ever-evolving landscape of workplace safety.
