US Oversight and Reform Committee Starts Investigating Amazon

Amazon has been asked to submit documentation after concerns of labor practices arose.

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform launched an investigation on Amazon last week regarding labor practices.

According to a press release, a letter requesting documentation was sent to Amazon’s President on March 31, 2022. The inquiry comes after six workers of an Amazon warehouse died during a tornado in Edwardsville, Illinois on December 10 and 11, 2021. Per the letter, Amazon supervisors allegedly told workers if they left, they would face consequences, including termination.

The letter includes requests for:

  • Documents on emergency preparedness
  • All communication to workers about the weather event on December 10 and 11
  • Policies regarding attendance and leave and discipline and termination
  • Documents on worker’s rights
  • Information on worker injuries and death since 2017
  • Documents on internal investigations about December 10 and 11

Amazon has until April 14, 2022 to provide documentation.

The letter was signed by Carolyn B. Maloney, D-NY, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, and Cori Bush, D-MO.
