Major New Public Hospital Opens in Ankara

The Bilkent Integrated Health Campus is a $1.3 billion health care facility in Ankara that was developed by GE Healthcare and CNN Holding through Turkey's largest public-private partnership to date. It is one of the world's largest public hospitals ever constructed in a single phase.

GE Healthcare and Turkish health care developer CCN Holding announced the opening of the Bilkent Integrated Health Campus, a $1.3 billion health care facility in Ankara that was produced through Turkey's largest public-private partnership to date and is one of the world's largest public hospitals ever constructed in a single phase. The opening ceremony was Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The facility has 3,711 beds. It consists of a core diagnostic center and six towers housing a cardiovascular hospital, general hospital, children's hospital, maternity hospital, oncology hospital, and neurology hospital, as well as a clinic hotel and administrative building for the Turkish Ministry of Health. The campus also includes 904 polyclinics, a 700-bed intensive care unit, a 300-bed physiotherapy and rehabilitation hospital, and a 100-bed high-security forensic psychiatry hospital. GE Healthcare reported that the campus is expected to cater to more than 36,000 people per day, including patients, visitors, and staff.

According to the company, the facility is part of a trend across many countries in the region to bring together public and private organizations in partnerships that deliver solutions at a new scale for greater impact, and the Turkish Ministry of Health has committed $15 billion to this health care transformation strategy.

"The inauguration of the Bilkent Health Campus is the result of a truly collaborative partnership that combines the best in public-sector execution models with private-sector competencies," said Murat Çeçen, chairman of CCN Holding. "We are proud to be one of the primary consortium partners serving the Ministry of Health and the people of Turkey."

GE Healthcare reported that its engineers managed to install more than 2,228 medical systems such as mammography, CT, MRIs, ultrasound, and anesthesia machines at the facility in just over 2,600 hours in all. Elie Chaillot, president & CEO, Eastern Growth Markets, for GE Healthcare, said the opening "is a powerful illustration of how innovative public-private partnerships can help address health care challenges faced by governments and ministries of health. We are proud to be a partner in Turkey’s health care transformation and help deliver on the priority of improving community health. Today, as the Bilkent Campus opens its doors to the public, citizens from across the country and region benefit from greater access to higher-quality health care—at one state-of-the-art, centrally located facility. Turkey has reaffirmed its status as a pioneer in health care transformation in both the region and around the world."
