Bechtel-Led Consortium Resumes Role at Pantex, Oak Ridge

Consolidated Nuclear Security—whose members are Bechtel National, Inc., Lockheed Martin Services, Inc., ATK Launch Systems Inc., SOC LLC, and Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc.as a teaming subcontractor—will manage the operations. The two facilities maintain the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile.

Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC, led by Bechtel, is immediately moving to resume control of the operation of the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas, and the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., by order of the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration, the company announced March 7. The consortium was chosen in 2013 to manage and operate these nuclear security facilities, but the transition was put on hold as the contract award was reviewed by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

"Resuming transition is critical to begin delivering improved efficiency, reliability, and cost effectiveness needed to maintain these sites' critical missions," said John Howanitz, Bechtel's Nuclear Security and Operations general manager. "It is also the first step in reducing the uncertainty faced by the dedicated employees and communities at both Pantex and Y-12."

"Our team has maintained a high state of readiness to effect a smooth transition, and we are ready to begin work with the National Nuclear Security Administration on this important project," said Jim Haynes, Consolidated Nuclear Security's CEO. "We remain committed to high standards of safety, security, and efficiency as we deliver our work during transition and throughout the length of our contract."
