Report Accuses Uranium Facility Guards of Cheating

A training test supplied to a guard force for the Energy Department allegedly was given to employees before they took the test.

A new report claims cheating took place among the guard force at the country's top storage facility for uranium that could be used for nuclear weapons. At the Y-12 facility in Knoxville, Tenn., it was discovered that members of the guard force had answers to test questions.

After protestors broke into the facility in July, guards were required to take a test to improve procedure. When a visiting official from the U.S. Department of Energy was visiting the facility in August, a copy of the test was found in one of the guards' patrol cars.

The guards said supervisors gave them a copy of the test to "study." The copy of the test included answers from the written portion and had the word "TEST" at the top of the paper. Facility security is provided by an outside contractor, Babcock and Wilcox Technical Services Y-12, LLC. Officials from the contractor gave supervisors advance copies of the test to review for accuracy.
