The Security and Safety Summit
Date: Tuesday October 29, 2024 at 12PM ET/9AM PT – 3PM ET/12PM PT
Understanding that the worlds of workplace security and safety can sometimes overlap, sister publications Occupational Health & Safety and Security Today are joining forces to hold a one-day virtual summit to host three sessions that will look at the security and safety implications for three innovations. Expert speakers from the occupational safety and workplace security worlds will help security and safety professionals better understand how to approach and level these technologies:
Artificial Intelligence
12-1 p.m. ET
- Security -- While relatively new, Artificial intelligence can enhance threat detection, automate monitoring, predict potential risks, and streamline incident response by analyzing large volumes of data in real time. The growing use of predictive analytics and automated threat response is a rising trend, but addressing data privacy, bias in AI algorithms, and the need for robust cybersecurity to protect AI systems themselves, are important concerns.
- Safety -- Artificial intelligence in workplace and occupational safety is used to predict hazards, monitor worker behavior, automate safety inspections, and analyze data to prevent accidents and improve compliance with safety regulations. Safety professionals can now dynamically update safety protocols in real time based on data from AI-driven hazard detection and risk assessments, enabling faster response to emerging risks while ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

He has provided consulting services to Asian Development Bank, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the World Bank and various UN agencies.
Video Surveillance/Analytics
1-2 p.m. ET
- Security -- Video surveillance systems are used in company security to monitor and record activities in real time, deter criminal behavior, and provide evidence for incident investigations. The integration of AI-driven analytics is enabling real-time threat detection, facial recognition, and automated response, while raising concerns over data privacy and regulatory compliance.
- Safety -- Video surveillance systems help monitor employee behavior, ensure compliance with safety protocols, and identify hazards in real time to prevent accidents and improve overall safety performance. In this venue, AI and machine learning can automatically detect unsafe behaviors, monitor PPE compliance, and analyze near-miss incidents, while balancing worker privacy concerns and regulatory challenges.

Access Control
2-3 p.m. ET
- Security -- Access control technology in workplace security is used to manage and monitor entry to facilities, ensure that only authorized personnel have access to sensitive areas, and prevent unauthorized intrusions, enhancing overall security. The adoption of biometric authentication and mobile-based credentials, allowing for seamless, secure access while addressing concerns about data privacy, cybersecurity, and worker/guest convenience.
- Safety -- Access control innovations are helping to regulate and monitor entry to restricted areas, ensure only authorized personnel access hazardous zones, and track worker movements to enhance safety and compliance. Technologies such as biometric authentication, wearables and geofencing, allowing personalized, real-time access control to hazardous areas based on both identity and location.
