Ginny, Alpha's Mine Rescue Dog

Alpha Natural Resources says Ginny, a Dutch Shepherd, is the first dog specially trained for underground and surface mine rescue. The company created Facebook and Twitter pages for her and features her in a YouTube video. "We are excited to welcome Ginny to the Alpha Natural Resources family. She is a tremendous new asset for mine search and rescue, both for our company and the industry, and is part of our larger commitment to safety,” said Kevin Crutchfield, chairman and CEO of Alpha. “Ginny also demonstrates our Running Right process in action, showing how our company takes employee ideas to enhance safety and makes them a reality." Ginny, a brindle-colored Dutch Shepherd, is trained to search for missing, trapped, injured, or unresponsive humans in unstable conditions or confined areas. She has a highly-developed scent ability and can canvass large areas in short amounts of time. To help protect and support her when working in the field, Ginny also wears a specially designed protective vest that carries sophisticated technology, such as an infrared camera and atmospheric gas detector, when underground. She was bred at a kennel that provides some of the highest-performing dogs in existence to branches of the U.S. military, law enforcement, and homeland security. Her formal training took more than two years and was led by Bill Dotson, a recognized canine behaviorist with expertise in the development of highly specialized skills for search, rescue, and recovery. Ginny continues to train with Alpha's mine search and rescue teams so that they know how to best work with her and leverage her skills. Ginny currently resides with her handler, Rick McAllister, Alpha's director of Continuous Improvement. He came up with the idea the company should train a dog specifically for mine search and rescue. Fluor Values: Safety

For the past century, Fluor has brought its unparalleled safety culture to all corners of the globe. It is a value so deeply entrenched that most employees say they cannot separate safety mindfulness from their working hours and their time at home. If something wouldn't be safe at a job site, it's not acceptable at home. There is a strong conviction in the voices of Fluor employees when you ask them about safety. In literally every Fluor office and within every Fluor project, all meetings of any kind begin with a relevant safety briefing. In this way, the value and importance of safety are continually kept in the forefront of employee consciousness. This safety mantra is evident at projects from the United States to China, and everywhere in between. It is this culture that has allowed Fluor to achieve a well-earned reputation as a safety leader in the global engineering and construction industry.
